Taking your dog on a bike: basket, trailer or cargo bike?

elbike.dk actually started with a dog: the founder needed a cargo bike for Agnes and couldn't find honest, structured data to choose from. So we take this topic personally. The good news: almost every dog can come along by bike — the right solution depends first on your dog's weight and temperament, and then on how often it rides. Here is the whole decision, step by step.
First: what are the rules?
- Transport must be safe and responsible. There is no specific Danish law against cycling with a dog, but the animal must be secured — harnessed or behind a net — and must not be able to jump out or interfere with your steering.
- A dog on a leash next to the bike is a bad idea in traffic. One cat, one pull, and you're on the asphalt. At most on quiet gravel roads — never in city traffic, and never with the leash around your wrist or handlebar.
1. Choose by your dog's weight
- Small dogs: a basket on the handlebar or rear rack. Cheapest and easiest. Always check two numbers before buying: the basket's own weight limit and the rack's rated load — on e-bikes the battery often uses part of the rack's capacity already.
- Medium dogs: a bike trailer. The dog rides low and stable, is sheltered from the weather, can't jump into traffic — and the trailer unhitches in five seconds when not needed.
- Large dogs — and any dog that rides often: a cargo bike. The box is built for load, the dog lies in front of you where you can see each other, and with electric assist you barely notice the extra kilos. More in section 4.
If your dog is old, has mobility issues or is nervous, step one level down the list: a trailer or a low-entry cargo box is gentler than any basket.
2. Basket: the light option for small dogs
Three requirements for a good dog basket: it must be firmly mounted (click-on bracket, not straps alone), have a solid floor the dog can stand on safely — and it must always be used with a net or harness so the dog can't leap out after a cat at full speed. A jump from a basket at 20 km/h ends badly, even for small dogs.

3. Trailer: stable and safe for medium dogs
A dog trailer rides low and calm, shelters from wind and rain, and is the gentlest transport for dogs that can't balance or jump high. With e-bikes, mind two things: attach the trailer exactly as the manufacturer specifies (the hitch must fit your rear axle), and remember your braking distance grows with 20–30 kilos in tow — especially downhill.

4. Cargo bike: the everyday solution for dogs of all sizes
An electric cargo bike isn't just for big dogs — it's the most comfortable option for any dog that rides often, and for large dogs it's realistically the only one. The dog lies in the box in front of you, the box shrugs off wet, sandy paws, and there's room for the dog and the groceries. If the dog joins you to work, the woods or the beach several times a week, nothing beats it.
What to look for when the dog is a regular passenger:
- Low entry or a door in the box — older and heavy dogs must be able to walk in themselves. Nihola and several other brands have doors in the box; see our curated list Best cargo bike for dogs.
- Non-slip floor — a rubber mat or strapped-down blanket makes the ride secure and the box easy to hose down.
- Max load with margin — dog + groceries + possibly a child. All dimensions and load ratings are on the model pages in the database.
- An anchor point for a harness — a short line in the box, so the dog can neither jump nor fall out in a turn.

5. Training: the first three rides
- Ride 0 (standing still): Let the dog sniff the bike, hop in, and get treats in the basket, box or trailer while everything stands still. Over several days if needed.
- Ride 1 (5 minutes): Calm asphalt, no traffic. Ride slowly, talk calmly, and stop before the dog gets restless — the ride must end well.
- Ride 2 and on: Extend gradually and reward calm behaviour. Most dogs end up loving it — wind in the fur is, after all, a dog's favourite mode of transport.
Checklist before the first ride
- Harness or short line anchored in the basket/box/trailer — never a collar (the neck takes the jolt when you brake).
- Net on the basket, if the dog rides in one.
- Non-slip surface the dog can stand on.
- Water along on rides over half an hour — and shade breaks in warm weather.
- Do your first ride without the dog but with similar load (a sack of dog food is honest ballast), so you know how the bike behaves.
Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to cycle with a dog in Denmark?
Yes — there is no specific law against it. The transport just has to be safe: the dog must sit securely (strapped in or behind a net) and must not be able to jump out or interfere with your steering. Walking a dog on a lead next to the bike is discouraged in traffic.
How big a dog can sit in a bike basket?
Only small dogs — and always within both the basket’s and the rear rack’s stated maximum weight. On e-bikes the battery often uses part of the rack’s capacity already. Medium and large dogs belong in a trailer or a cargo bike.
