For many families in Denmark, an electric cargo bike is the realistic alternative to a second car — and at prices from just over DKK 20,000 to above 60,000, it's a decision that deserves data rather than gut feeling. We compared every electric cargo bike in our database on motor, battery, load capacity, weight and price. These are the six we would spend our own money on.
The 6 best electric cargo bikes right now
Best for most people
Nihola Family
3-wheel cargo bike
- Rear hub motor
- 54 Nm
- 396 Wh
- 2 kids
- 3 wheels
- 32 kg
The Nihola Family has been the workhorse of Copenhagen families for over 20 years, and the electric version shows why: low weight, a low centre of gravity, and steering where the box stays put while the front wheels turn. That gives a confidence in corners that many heavier competitors can't match.
- +Only 32 kg — unusually light for a three-wheeled cargo bike
- +The box stays still, only the front wheels turn — stable, predictable handling
- +Danish classic with parts and service across the country
- −54 Nm and 396 Wh are on the modest side
- −Hard plastic box rather than wood — a matter of taste
Best two-wheeler
Urban Arrow Family Performance Plus
2-wheel cargo bike
- Mid-drive motor
- 65 Nm
- 500 Wh
- 2 kids
- 2 wheels
- 51 kg
The Urban Arrow Family is Europe's best-selling two-wheeled cargo bike, and the Performance Plus version hits the best balance of price and equipment in the range. If you want to keep city speed and park in a normal bike rack, this is where to look.
- +Bosch Performance motor with a large service network

Christiania E-Light 8gear & promovec elmotor
3-wheel cargo bike
- Rear hub motor
- 48 Nm

- 3 wheels
- 35 kg
Christiania Bikes' entry model proves that a well-proven Danish cargo bike with electric assist doesn't have to cost DKK 30,000+. The E-Light is simple, light and cheap to keep running — and its 626 Wh battery is actually bigger than on many pricier bikes.
- +Genuine Christiania quality at the lowest price in the range

Larry vs Harry's Bullitt is the bike messengers' tool of choice for a reason: it rides faster, weighs less and takes up less space than anything else with a cargo deck. With the Shimano E6100 motor it becomes a realistic family option too — if you can live with the narrow deck.

How to pick the right one
Two or three wheels?
Three wheels stand on their own and feel safe at low speed — ideal with small children and frequent stops. Two wheels ride faster, take less space and feel more like a normal bike, but need practice with a heavy load. In doubt? Read box cargo bike or longtail.
Motor: look at Nm, not watts
All legal e-bikes have 250 W motors — the difference is torque. Below 50 Nm you clearly feel a full load uphill; 65–85 Nm pulls effortlessly. The mid-drive vs. hub motor question is covered in the motor guide.
Battery and range
400 Wh typically covers 30–50 km with a load; 600+ Wh manages 50–80 km. Buying used? Battery health is the single most important thing to check — see the used-bike checklist.
